Making an Affordable Luxury Watch
KARL-LEIMON, which has become the top brand in Japanese-made watches, was created in 2017 through crowdfunding by two young foreign foreign students in Japan.
Despite the boom in minimalism in today’s society, the founders held a belief in the timelessness of classic design. To celebrate their graduation from the university, they searched for a classic wristwatch that they could wear throughout the years without growing tired of it. But such a watch was too expensive for young people, and they were unable to find what they were looking for at an affordable price.
At that point, they decided to come up with a truly classic, but affordable watch that would be to their liking—a moon-phase watch in particular.
The two friends embarked on a two-year journey to create the perfect moon-phase watch. They created dozens of samples in various colors to develop the optimal design and moon phase colors that evoke the greatest sense of luxury. They also made the movement holder, which is invisible to the wearer, from metal instead of the typical plastic, out of consideration for both the watch’s fit and stability. It was this level of obsession in design that caused them to be turned away from several factories during the development stage.
However, they did not compromise and simply accept the conventional wisdom of the industry. As they continued to develop their watch line, they remained steadfast in their belief that if they could create a watch that they, as consumers, truly wanted, many others would feel the same way and buy such a watch. As a result of this tenacity, KARL-LEIMON has been able to raise more than 40 million yen through crowdfunding both nationally and internationally.

This is Moon phase, invented by genius Breguet of 18th Century. It was the ultimate evolution of mechanical watches. Only premium Swiss watches were capable of manifesting it.
This hearts a tiny universe. This combines technical superiority and romantic charm; this stimulates the inner desire of possession of the people.
However, when the era of quartz watch landed, the power of the premium mechanical watch gradually waned, and together with it, moon phase became a relic.
Now, we, KARL-LEIMON, have this new belief. We want to bring back this crown jewel (at a reasonable price).
